On 25 and 26 August, the project partners of the RegioWertGeben project met in Gießen for their project meeting. The focus was on solutions for increasing the use of locally grown organic vegetables in communal catering, as well as preparations for the upcoming synthesis workshop, at which the project’s findings to date will be brought together.

Another key focus of the meeting was planning knowledge transfer for the coming months. Two practical dialogue sessions are planned – one in North Hesse and one in the Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart region – as well as a national transfer workshop. In addition, participation in several specialist events is planned, including BioFach 2027, as well as the production of a video on the project’s findings.

The RegioWertGeBen collaborative project aims to develop sustainable approaches to strengthening regional and organic community catering – using the vegetable sector as a case study. To this end, the two pilot regions of Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart and North Hesse are being studied: there, the regional food systems centred on vegetables will be mapped out and the potential for a higher proportion of organic produce in canteens, university dining halls and other communal catering facilities will be explored through the establishment of regional value chains. On this basis, recommendations for action for stakeholders in the food system, as well as policy recommendations, will be drawn up.

The project, which runs from March 2024 to February 2027, is coordinated by the IfLS, in collaboration with two departments at Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Centre for Organic Agriculture and Sustainable Regional Development at the University of Kassel. RegioWertGeBen is funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH) as part of the Federal Programme for Organic Farming, with the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) acting as the project managing body.
