Land use conflicts renewable energy: Scenario-based environmental education on the spatial requirements of renewable energy using new media - Feasibility study

Within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the international community strives for economic progress and social justice within ecological boundaries. The SDGs consist of 17 equal goals, including "clean and affordable energy", "food security", and "life on land". The individual SDGs give rise to potential conflicts of objectives, which are subject of planning processes. The discussion revolving around the expansion of renewable energies shows how issues such as urban development, biodiversity and species protection or economic development and the development of greenhouse gas emissions are linked at the regional level.

Within the project LaNuKon, an implementation concept for a simulation tool for the matching of SDGs and the spatial requirements of competing land uses will be developed using the example of renewable energies. This is particularly aimed at young people, schoolchildren and students and is intended to increase awareness among users of conservation objectives, the regulation of land use conflicts and sustainable development paths. The aim is

  • increased assessment competence with regard to the use of renewable energies,
  • to point out necessary negotiation processes for the implementation of individual SDGs,
  • to simulate development paths regarding spatial requirements of renewable energies and SDGs,
  • raise awareness for consequences of different development paths for the "own" as well as "other" regions are shown,
  • and evaluated these based on ethical approaches.

The simulation tool shall be available for individual use as well as in an supervised environment, e.g. a virtual classroom.

The project will be coordinated by the Heidelberg University of Education. The IfLS will be responsible for the collection and the processing of the necessary data for such a tool. The pedagogical-didactic concept and the technical specifications will be developed by the UNESCO Chair for Earth Observation and Geocommunication of the PH Heidelberg and Siegmund Space & Education gGmbH. The project result is a specification sheet for the development of such a simulation tool.
