Project details

Sustainable development of cultural landscapes using integrative landscape concept

In cooperation with the Institute for Spatial Planning and Development Planning (IREUS) at the University of Stuttgart, the Institute for Rural Structural Research (IfLS) is developing an integrative landscape model based on the example of the community of Hinterzarten in the Black Forest. A common vision of the future landscape is developed with the local actors. Against the background of manifesting megatrends such as climate change, demographic change or political reforms such as the reorientation of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy, rural cultural landscapes are under enormous pressure to change. The cumulative effects of the resulting changes in land use can lead to massive problems (e.g. loss of biodiversity, loss of the familiar landscape). Strategies must therefore be developed at the local level as to how sustainable landscape development can be achieved in view of the new challenges.
