Periodic review recording the Biosphere Bliesgau

According to the International Guidelines for the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the first evaluation of the Bliesgau biosphere, which was recognised by UNESCO in 2009, is scheduled to take place after ten years. The IfLS, together with Professor Dr. Jedicke from Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences, has been commissioned by the Biosphere Association.

The "Periodic Review Report" will not only cover the requirements of the MAB-programme. In addition, the current surveys of the Integrated Monitoring Programme, co-developed by the IfLS, are used as well as the knowledge gained during the development of the framework concept for the biosphere.

For the first time, the contributions of BR Bliesgau to the Lima Action Plan will also be collected. The Lima Action Plan is a binding document under international law that provides for the implementation of the MAB Strategy 2015-2025 in biosphere reserves. It lists specific goals of how the MAB Strategy and the implementation of the SDGs in biosphere reserves can be achieved.

The periodic review will focus on the work of the Biosphere Association and the development within the region since UNESCO recognition. It is an opportunity to refresh knowledge about the ecosystem and sustainable economies. The periodic review is therefore not only proof of the Association’s work vis-à-vis UNESCO. It can also help to strengthen the quality of the biosphere as a model region for developing and testing new approaches to sustainable development.
