Global Sustainable Municipality Hesse (GNK Hessen) - support for municipalities in Hesse in developing their own municipal sustainability strategy

In June 2025, the Global Sustainable Municipality Hesse (GNK Hessen) project entered its second round. The aim is to support municipalities in Hesse in developing their own municipal sustainability strategy - based on the United Nations 2030 Agenda with its 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

IfLS is providing technical and procedural support to four Hessian municipalities on this path: the Lahn-Dill district, Pfungstadt, Lohfelden and the state capital Wiesbaden. A further four municipalities (Breuberg, Oestrich-Winkel, Nidderau and Wettenberg) are being supported by project partner team ewen.

IfLS supports and advises the participation of the administration, local politicians and relevant local stakeholders. Together, we develop visions, guidelines and goals for sustainable development in the respective municipality in workshops and strategy sessions. The basis for this is a comprehensive assessment of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, which was carried out by IfLS Beratung und Projekte GmbH in all eight participating municipalities in 2024.
In 2025, the focus will be on strategic orientation - with the aim of defining clear fields of action and priorities. With appropriate funding, concrete measures and indicators are to be developed from 2026 onwards in order to make progress measurable.

GNK Hessen is a project of the Service Agency Communities in One World of Engagement Global on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In Hesse, it is supported by the Sustainability Strategy Office at the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment.
