The Stuttgart Region, as an association of the state capital with five economically strong districts in the immediate vicinity, has good agricultural production conditions in a state-wide comparison. The proportion of intensively used agricultural land is therefore also high. However, intensive agricultural use brings with it conflicts with nature and soil conservation, the preservation of biodiversity and the diversity of the landscape. There are also expectations in society to transform agriculture into a sustainable food system with environmentally sound, sustainable production methods and to increase the supply level of the population with regionally produced high-quality food.
At the same time, there is high pressure on agricultural land due to the continuing demand for land for housing, industry and infrastructure, local recreation and compensatory measures close to interventions. In addition, there are currently further land demands in open space for the production of renewable energies, e.g. through wind power, photovoltaics or the cultivation of energy crops.
The commissioned study is intended to bring clarity to this complex situation and provide a basis for future decisions and course-setting with regard to agriculture in the region. The core of the study is the question of the future of agriculture in the conurbation.
