ESD concept for the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park

The Steinhuder Meer Nature Park, with the largest inland lake in north-west Germany, its moors and wetlands, and its dune and geest landscapes, forms an exceptionally diverse natural and recreational region, the full context of which needs to be communicated. Against the backdrop of ESD being enshrined in law as a duty of nature parks (Section 27 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act), an ESD concept is being developed for the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park that strategically consolidates and further develops its educational work.

The aim of developing this concept is to clearly position the nature park as an ESD provider and to define its own priorities and target groups. The concept will identify which regional themes are of particular significance for the nature park.

The concept will be developed in a practical and dialogue-oriented manner. The starting point is an inventory of existing activities, locations, programmes and partnerships within the nature park, supplemented by a review of existing concepts and materials. Building on this, a small-scale participatory process will incorporate the perspectives of partners and other regional stakeholders, and an internal workshop will be held with the nature park’s administrative office.

Another key focus of the ESD concept is organisational embedding: it describes how ESD can be structurally implemented within the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park.

The concept thus serves as a guide for future educational work in the nature park and as a starting point for working with partners to develop a robust ESD framework and implement it step by step.
