In the years 2024 and 2025 the IfLS Consulting and Projects is exploring the potentials of a systematic circular economy in rural areas. In this context, biosphere reserves serve as model regions for strategic approaches.

Circular economy (CE) is no longer seen solely as an economic system but as a solution to global issues such as climate change and environmental pollution. Nevertheless, there is a lack of systematic approaches in Germany, especially in rural areas. Studies indicate that regional strategies and coordinated collaboration are crucial. Biosphere reserves offer ideal conditions. The project "Biosphere Reserves as Model Regions for Circular Economy in Rural Areas" examines their potential for a circular economy, identifies challenges, and presents perspectives.

Our approach includes:
1.    Inventory and Needs Analysis: We capture the status and needs in biosphere reserves as a solid foundation for further steps.
2.    Development of regional circular economy strategies: In close collaboration with three selected biosphere reserves, we initiate participatory processes for the development of regional profiles and strategies.
3.    Synthesis and Recommendations: We consolidate the results and derive concrete recommendations targeting administrations, policymakers, and local initiatives. A comprehensive synthesis report concludes this process.

Our goals are clearly defined:
•    We aim to raise awareness of the significance and potential of a circular economy.
•    Through the development of criteria and standards for regional action plans, we aim to create a practical guide.
•    Additionally, we lay the groundwork for the establishment of living labs that will experiment with and advance innovative solutions in line with a sustainable circular economy.
