How can farms break new ground and actively shape their future?

Behind every successful diversification initiative are people who develop ideas, recognise opportunities and are prepared to try something new. How agricultural businesses can be supported in this regard was the focus of the specialist conference ‘New Paths in Diversification – Innovations, Start-ups and Successful Case Studies’, organised by the NEU.LAND. start-up centre of the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture (LfL).

For diversification to succeed, economic prospects, personal goals and operational requirements must be aligned. Alongside profitability and income, quality of life, security and the personal aspirations of those on the farm play a central role. Successful farm development means continually reassessing one’s own business: what contributes to success today – and what will be needed tomorrow? A culture of open dialogue helps to understand different perspectives and develop new approaches together. It is also important to be willing to try new things and learn from experience. Ideas continue to evolve, framework conditions change and unexpected opportunities open up new possibilities. The key questions remain: What are the needs of my target group? What market opportunities exist? Those who analyse the market, realistically assess resources and calculate profitability will develop (more) sustainable business models.

Challenges include, in particular, business risks, a heavy workload, a lack of specialist and market knowledge, as well as bureaucratic hurdles and uncertain framework conditions. This makes reliable political and legal frameworks, easily accessible support services and effective networks all the more important. This requires people who, at the interface between agriculture, consultancy, education and administration, provide guidance, offer advice and connect stakeholders with one another.

The key message: working together to pave new paths. Successful diversification requires not only good ideas and investment, but also entrepreneurial skills, support and professional guidance. The aim is to empower farms to recognise opportunities, explore new avenues, learn from experience and establish sustainable lines of business for the long term.
