Community-led initiatives as drivers of innovation: visiting community projects with the INSPIRE project

What happens when communities and local initiatives develop and implement solutions themselves? Our visit with the INSPIRE project in Ireland shows that community-led approaches and digitalisation can strengthen structurally weak regions – if used correctly.

From 12 to 13 May, we met with our partners from the INSPIRE project (Interreg Europe) in Ireland to exchange ideas. The focus was on the question: How can rural regions drive forward digitalisation and social innovation through locally-led initiatives? The answer: By focusing on community, pragmatism, the right framework conditions and targeted support.

At Ballyhoura Development, our Irish partner, concrete approaches were presented that demonstrate how digitalisation and community can work together:

One example was food units serving as incubators for local food start-ups. Here, food start-ups are given the opportunity to experiment in a protected environment, exchange knowledge and grow together. No high-tech solutions, but practical support tailored to the region’s needs.

Another example is the digitisation of gravestones using AI to boost local tourism. This creates a new way for people to access their history, particularly for Irish emigrants – for example, those who have moved to Canada – who are seeking their roots in the region. Here, too, the focus is not on the technology itself, but on the benefits for the community.

A key factor in the success of these projects is the strategic support and guidance that goes beyond mere financial resources. Facilitation is crucial – that is, supporting processes that connect local stakeholders, make knowledge accessible and create opportunities for new ventures. The Smart Villages approach demonstrates that this is not about expensive technologies,

Together with our German partner region, the LEADER region of Lahn-Dill-Wetzlar, we will discuss what we can learn. Further information is available at: https://www.interregeurope.eu/inspire
