The Institute

With the Institute for Rural Development Research (Institut für ländliche Strukturforschung e.V.) and IfLS Consulting and Projects (IfLS Beratung und Projekte GmbH), we have committed to dedicated research and active consulting for a sustainable development. Both organisations are active within the following thematic areas and service sectors, each with a different focus:

To find out what our commitment to a dedicated research and active consultancy for a sustainable development means for us, both externally and internally, see our principles:

The Institute for Rural Development Research was founded in 1957 as a non-profit association. Its statutory purpose is the promotion of science and research in the field of sustainable regional development and how it is shaped by relevant policies, especially agricultural and food policy as well as structural, regional and environmental policy.

In accordance with the purpose of the statutes, we carry out research projects and prepare scientific reports, whose results we publish. We also organise scientific events, seminars and various information, knowledge transfer and awareness-raising measures. We work together with national and international associations and cooperate with the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.

In addition to research projects based on grants, over time consultancy assignments, contract research as well as related services accounted for a growing share of the Institute's work. As a result of this development, the Institute for Rural Development Research founded IfLS Consulting and Projects as a 100% subsidiary on 10 December 2021 in order to outsource parts of its economic activities.

The activities of IfLS Consulting and Projects are research, consulting and other services in the above-mentioned areas.

The work of both organisations is organised under the "IfLS roof" in the following three working areas:

    1. Rural Development, Agriculture and Environment
    2. International Perspectives, Agricultural Policy and Rural Development
    3. Regional Development, Innovation Consultancy and Protected Areas.
