The IfLS carries out the R&D project "Quality Management in German Biosphere Reserves - Development of Criteria, Recommendations and Implementation Strategies for the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). The IfLS is working on the project in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Eckhard Jedicke. Its objective is to support the work of biosphere reserves (BR) in the field of sustainable economic development.
Three outputs contribute to the project’s objective: The first output is a developed and tested set of indicators for sustainable development. The set is based on the R&D project Quality Management and Improvement of the German UNESCO Biosphere Reserves - Operationalisation of National Recognition and Review Criteria for Sustainable Management (IfLS: 2017-2018). The existing framework will be improved in terms of applicability and tested in three BRs. Based in this set a management toolbox will be developed. It allows BR to direct and assess their activities and to communicate and disseminate their results and effects. The Lima Action plan and with it the implementation of the UN Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development goals will be included.
The second output consist of text modules for a policy paper regarding the transition area. This is the zone where all the three functions from conserving biodiversity, supporting logistics but especially sustainable development take place.
The third output will be a proposal for a revision of the international report form for the periodic review. The insights from applying the set of indicators for sustainable development will be included in the development process.
