Legal instruments for an increased environmentalism in agriculture

In December 2011, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ GmbH, in cooperation with the IfLS, was awarded a contract by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) to carry out
a review and further development of the existing environmental legal requirements in agriculture. The research and development project is intended to contribute to establishing improvements for sustainable agricultural land use. In addition to the environmental quality objectives for water, soil and air, special attention will be paid to climate protection and adaptation.
The report focuses on regulatory and planning law. The Department of Environmental and Planning Law of the UFZ (Main Contractor)
will examine relevant environmental and technical regulations with regard to their steering effects and identify deficits. Other instruments, such as advisory services and funding, will also be taken into account in the project and fall primarily within the scope of the IfLS. In addition, the IfLS will evaluate improvement proposals for selected instruments with regard to their feasibility and effectiveness.

For January 2013, a one-day expert meeting is planned at the UBA to present the results of the expert opinion and with the client, the project advisory board and other invited experts.
