Evaluation of protected geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed in the EU


Since 1992 – and revised in 2012 – agricultural products and food can be protected in the European Union with the designation of origin Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) as well as the Qual-ity Seal Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG). Now the European Union would like to take stock provisionally of the situation with a study on 'Evaluation of protected geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed in the EU'.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the added value of the EU’s protected Geographical Indications and traditional specialities guaranteed in the EU. Various methodological building blocks are used, such as interviews with experts, inquiries with national authorities, producer associations and consumers, country specific case studies or FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network) analyses.

The study follows on from the project Study on the economic value of EU quality regulations, geographical indications and guaranteed traditional specialities, which was completed last year.
