Biodiversity conservation through extensive grazing: Requirements for beef production and grazing systems in terms of their compatibility with conservation goals

This project initiated by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) intended to draw attention to the problem of nature and biodiversity conservation on grassland. Based on a comprehensive analysis of problems, possibilities for an improved grassland protection by consumers, conservationists and farmers, meat industry and trade, municipalities and politicians are demonstrated. Here, the promotion of production, marketing and consumption of beef produced nature-friendly (`nature conservation beef´) is of central interest.

The project identifies the framework and requirements of the market needing to be considered in the context of the marketing of this product. Potentials and restrictions are highlighted and suggestions for an improved marketing of `nature conservation beef´ are delivered.

Positive practical examples illustrate ways to realise objectives of nature conservation through beef marketing.
