The GOBIOM project (Design Options for Economically Viable, Biodiversity-Promoting Dairy Production Systems in the Freiburg and Ravensburg Organic Model Regions) is coming to an end.
It became clear that promoting biodiversity in dairy production requires a wide range of measures that involve all stakeholders at various levels. A key component is financial incentives for biodiversity-friendly dairy production—both through the market and through support mechanisms such as the CAP. Support measures should be designed to be flexible and unbureaucratic. Expanded product labeling, such as a government-issued pasture-raised milk label, could help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Furthermore, educational and advisory services for the agricultural sector on the topic of biodiversity are essential, and the general public should be better informed—in a manner tailored to specific target groups—about agriculture and its role in fulfilling societal functions, as well as the connection to their own consumption habits.
In addition to policymakers at the EU and federal levels, farms, consumers, value chain stakeholders, and local governments play a crucial role in promoting biodiversity.
Two recent working papers have published research and analyses from the project’s work packages led by the IfLS:
- Pabst, H. (2024): Economic Situation of GOBIOM Project Farms and Impacts of Potential Measures to Promote Biodiversity. Sub-report on Work Package 1.2 of the GOBIOM project.
- Nitsch, H. (2024): Instruments and Measures for Biodiversity-Promoting Dairy Production. Sub-report on Work Package 5 of the GOBIOM project.
In addition to the IfLS, project partners included the Öko-Institut (coordination) and the Büro grünweg. A final brochure on the overall GOBIOM project will be published shortly.
GOBIOM was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Research Initiative for the Conservation of Biodiversity.
