Setting the course for mixed farming systems – MIXED project meeting in Basel

We develop policy recommendations for more mixed land use systems and agroforestry

In the EU-funded project MIXED, we are looking at mixed land use systems and agroforestry in relation to climate, environment and society. These systems can take many forms, such as a mixture of livestock, crops or trees, and can take place within a field, a farm, between farms or even across an entire landscape or value chain.

A final project meeting was held in Basel in mid-September 2024, organised by the project partners FiBL and Hochstamm Suisse. Results from the various work packages were presented, some of which remain in progress: under the right conditions, more diversity in agricultural systems offers potential for increased resilience and sustainability. In the current market and support environment, economic viability is only partially given and many improvements are needed in the remuneration system.
The IfLS utilises these results to develop policy recommendations to improve the framework conditions for mixed land use systems. We were able to present and discuss an initial draft during the project meeting. In a workshop, the project partners reported back to us confirming their support for the structure we had envisaged. Collaboratively, we elaborated on further policy recommendations to cover the situation in different countries and for the different systems considered in the project. In the coming weeks, we will be further developing these aspects ahead of our policy workshop in Brussels in early December. We will then discuss the project results with agricultural policy stakeholders and take their suggestions on board.
MIXED is funded within the framework of EU Horizon 2020. The consortium comprises 19 organisations in ten European countries and will run until the end of February 2025.
