Together for more biodiversity in dairy - 1st GOBIOM Accompanying Group Meeting

The topic of biodiversity is on everyone's mind, and not just because of petitions such as "Save the Bees". A multitude of projects, networks, initiatives and events deal with this topic, which is no less important than climate protection.

Biodiversity, or rather the promotion of biodiversity, is also the central aspect of the GOBIOM project, which started its second phase at the end of 2021. Together with the Öko-Institut and the consultancy grünweg [in german], the IfLS is addressing the question of how biodiversity-promoting and at the same time economically viable dairy production systems can be established in the biomodel regions of Ravensburg and Freiburg.

On 11 February 2021, the first meeting of the accompanying group took place, in which representatives of the two model regions as well as Baden-Wurttemberg's regional councils, state institutions and agricultural offices, associations and research actively participate. The online event focused in particular on approaching farms - how can farms be convinced to participate in the project and what benefits does this offer them?

In addition to a whole-farm biodiversity advisory service, the farms are accompanied during the project period and supported in the realisation of biodiversity measures, as well as with the implementation of new CAP or the newly introduced organic regulations. The discussions showed that networking with existing initiatives should be emphasised. Even more relevant, however, is the practical implementation of the project: How do biodiversity measures affect the forage? What does the demand for biodiversity mean for the management of my farm? In the course of networking and practical relevance, various initiatives and projects are to be coordinated and synergies exploited.

The many valuable contributions are now being incorporated into the development of various formats for addressing the farms and the project in general. With the active support of the accompanying group, the next step will be to contact companies through various channels so that the first consultations and talks can start in April.
