National Committee of the UNESCO programme "Man and the Biosphere" travels to the Bliesgau Biosphere

On 24 and 25 October, the German National Committee (NK) of the UNESCO programme "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB) visited the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve as part of the "periodic review".

The MAB National Committee learned how the goal of establishing a model region for sustainable development in the Bliesgau Biosphere was implemented in the first 10 years since its foundation. The focus was on "Education for Sustainable Development", "Marketing of Regional Products" and "Climate Protection/Renewable Energies".

Various projects were visited, e.g. the "Essbare Stadt" in Blieskastel, the Bildungszentrum für Nachhaltige Entwicklung Spohns Haus and producers of regional products for the "Bliesgau-Regal". In addition, the participants exchanged ideas with regional actors.

The "periodic review" is planned every ten years in order to review developments in UNESCO biosphere reserves and, if successful, to extend UNESCO recognition for the next ten years. Together with Prof. Dr. Eckhard Jedicke, the IfLS supported the Biospherezweckverband in preparing the necessary documents for the review.
