Learning and acting sustainably in the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park

On 22.10.2020, a joint workshop with regional actors on the future direction of 'Education for Sustainable Development' (ESD) in the area of the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park took place in the Kiedrich community center. The reason for the workshop was the creation of a concept for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD concept), which the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park is developing in close cooperation with the Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS).

About 30 school and out-of-school educational institutions as well as other regional actors who are or want to become active in the field of ESD participated. In addition to a general lecture on the topic of ESD and the presentation of the results of the online survey on the ESD situation in the nature park area by Dr. Gehrlein and Ms. Thietje (IfLS), two guest speakers from other large protected areas, Ms. Feddersen - Managing Director of the Lüneburger Heide Nature Park - and Ms. Lagaly from the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, reported on their experiences in the field of ESD.

Afterwards, the group work phase began with lively discussions. Among other things, the topics and target groups for the design of future ESD services/activities in the nature park were worked out, the need for further development of existing services was discussed and the design of a future ESD network in the nature park area was addressed. The ideas collected will be incorporated into the ESD concept, which will form the basis for future nature park work in this thematic area and for certification of the nature park as an environmental education institution for ESD by the state of Hesse.
