How the private sector can enhance the value of social services in agriculture

Simone Sterly from IfLS together with colleagues from the PEGASUS project answer this question in the now published EuroChoices article.

Agriculture plays an important role in the provision of public goods and ecosystem services. The existing support through the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union is often not sufficient to achieve the social goals. The private sector is also already actively involved in financing the provision of ecological and social services - for example through the payment of premiums or greater integration of value chains. In the article, the authors outline various measures taken by the private sector to make the provision of environmental and social services by agriculture and forestry more effective. The article also provides a number of policy recommendations aimed at promoting private sector participation.
