Global Sustainable Municipality Hesse: First municipality adopts sustainability strategy – despite challenges ahead of the local elections

In February, the Global Sustainable Municipality Hesse project celebrated an important milestone: the first participating municipality successfully had its sustainability strategy adopted by the municipal council. Pfungstadt has successfully finalised the strategy.

For around a year, the project has been supporting eight municipalities in developing individual strategies for global sustainable development. But the path to this point has not always been easy. A particular challenge for all municipalities has been, and remains, dealing with the local elections. How can ongoing processes be continued when responsibilities and contact persons change? How can continuity in strategy development be maintained without overlooking the new political priorities? These questions have shaped the work of recent months – particularly during periods of transition.

GNK Hessen is a project of SKEW, part of Engagement Global, commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
