Exchange of experience on grazing in the chance.natur project 'New pastoral paths in the Palatinate Forest'

After the Institute for Environmental Studies (IUS) and the Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS) had conducted initial surveys and planning in the course of the large-scale nature conservation project, an exchange of experience between grazing livestock farms and the project team took place on September 28th. Helmut Schuler, head of the chance.natur project, welcomed those present at the Biosphere House in Fischbach near Dahn. He explained the project goals and current planning and emphasized once again the importance of cooperation with sheep farms and other grazers to achieve the nature conservation goals.

Following that, Jörg Schramek (IfLS) gave an overview of selected results of the surveys that the IfLS had conducted with livestock farms. What benefits do farms see from the project, but also what disadvantages? What wishes did they express? This provided an impulse for the subsequent discussion among the participants, which worked out what should be further worked on or what should be considered in the course of the project.

Finally, Oliver Röller (IUS) used selected areas in the project area as examples to show how cooperation with livestock owners could look like to achieve nature conservation goals. It was shown that a cooperation is possible which can take into account the goals of the chance.natur project and the interests of the grazers. The working group will continue to meet and coordinate at intervals of several months. Further information can be found here.
