Capturing the potential of the circular economy for rural development in Germany and Europe

At the 2021 networking meeting of the "Region gestalten" programme, Dr. Gehrlein presented the newly launched project " Potenziale der Kreislauswirtschaft für die ländliche Entwicklung in Deutschland und Europa " as part of a pitch on behalf of the consortium.

The concept of the circular economy promises a more sustainable and efficient economy if waste and the loss of raw materials are avoided by recycling or closing natural material cycles. This requires new approaches in the development, use and reuse of products as well as in their processing.
The potentials that a transformation towards a circular economy has for the development of rural areas have not been considered so far.
Within the framework of the project " Potenziale der Kreislauswirtschaft für die ländliche Entwicklung in Deutschland und Europa ", the framework conditions for the circular economy in rural areas in Germany and Europe are considered, the potentials in rural areas are analysed, case studies are examined and recommendations for action are developed.

The project is being implemented by Prognos AG (coordination) and the IfLS within the framework of the BMI programme "Region gestalten".
