Description of the project

Possibilities of promoting environment-friendly, sustainable forms of land use

The study was based to a considerable extent on a previous project which was concerned with the development of a conceptual framework for linking
(a) the modelling of ecological and technological cause-effect relations (natural sciences); with
(b) the analysis of the socio-economic determinants of actual or potential land use patterns.
The important additional dimension is that of implementation, constraints and options at the local level. The study focused on a range of representative regions and farms. Alternative policy measures and scenarios are simulated and evaluated. Methods used: the action research oriented approach used is characterized by participation, co-operation and – at the scientific level – multi-disciplinarity. Close collaboration between research, advisory services, farmers, environmentalists, planners and administrations has been a key feature of the project work. The main methods applied were: literature review and synthesis; workshops; regional- and farm-level case studies; and computer modelling. Main results achieved: identification and documentation of development trends in agricultural structures, farming patterns and environmental quality using suitable indicators; identification of key relationships; testing and further development of various computer models for examining and documenting the relevant relationships at farm level and for differing regional situations; elaboration and comparison of alternative scenarios of agricultural change.
